Life it too short to waste on a book you're not enjoying. I picked this up because it is recommended for fans of the Outlander series and I have time to burn before the next Outlander book comes out next year. I thought this could be a series I could sink my teeth into. To be honest, I don't understand why these two series are compared to one another. Gabaldon is a master; I complained pretty bitterly about The Fiery Cross, but that is Shakespeare compared to Into the Wilderness. The first element of success in any romance is to craft characters that the reader cares about. Into the Wilderness fails to accomplish this. Nearly a third into the book, when Nathanial and Elizabeth are facing danger, I wondered if it were wrong to hope they both die. Neither are particularly likeable, and I can't understand why either wants the other.I also had trouble with the stilted dialogue. Everything felt forced and unnatural. The story pacing in the beginning is too fast, as well. Two rather uninteresting people meet, and all of the sudden they are burning with passion. This book does a lot of 'telling' rather than 'showing'. Half the action is about dead characters, flashbacks told as story around the campfire. Now my two biggest pet peeves: First, in less than 100 pages, Nathanial asks Elizabeth 4 times: "What are you thinking" Really That just read so silly, like an oversensitive high school boy, not a sexy backwoods 'savage.' Secondly, the author incorporates three Outlander characters (again, by telling campfire stories about incidents long past) into the novel. It plays very awkwardly - not natural storytelling at all.Currently, Nathanial once again faces a life or death situation. Will he live or will he die Honestly, I just don't care. So, with that being said, I'm going to once again set out to find something that lives up to Outlander (my favorite book of all time) because this didn't cut it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.A nice alternative to Outlander, just not as detailed or developedBy Loz1217This was my first Sara Donati novel - looking for something to read after Outlander. While it definitely wasn't Diana Gabaldon material, it was very good, well written and the story kept me interested. I listened to most of the book on audible, which may have tainted my view of the author's writing, as I struggled to listen to the narration, which I thought was horrendous (but I didn't give up, as I like to "read" while I am walking). Then by a stroke of luck, I got a new phone and realized found that the audible wasn't downloaded on a recent flight and whipped through the last part of the book in no time - and enjoyed it much more. For this reason, I can't say with certainty if my expectations were so high - having just read the Outlander series, if the narration negatively tainted my experience, or if the writing isn't quite as good as Gabaldon's - but it was written well enough that it left me wanting to read the second book in the series (without narration). If you've read Outlander, I would say that this book is a bit more "fluffly" in its character descriptions or more dramatic without feeling as real. The storyline was excellent, if not a bit hard to follow who's related to who - with the English and Native names.I would recommend this book and look forward to the rest of the series.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This was by far more than just a great book; it was epic and I think I ...By Dawn Brown WeeklyThis was by far more than just a great book; it was epic and I think I am in love with Nathaniel Bonner. The attraction that Elizabeth fought at first for this man was so cute at first and I loved the way she finally gave into her feelings for him. I never got bored with this book and if I didn't have to go to work I would have kept my head in this book from sunup to sundown. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. It's real, it's everything an epic novel should be.See all 830 customer reviews...
