Her Grandparents are aghast at the uncanny resemblance to their daughter who left London in scandal n never returned. They further refuse to help but r willing to provide a dowry contingent upon her marriage. As for finding a husband. She finds herself unwittingly shunned by the "Ton" due to the filthy taint of trade. Her Grandfather made his money by acquiring a fabric processing plant during the American Revolution. Then purchasing a sword n bayonet armament just as Napoleon was rising to power. Strike three, ur out!!Oliver York spent 3 yrs fighting the French n returns to London embittered by the horror n brutality he witnessed while the aristocrats "danced n partied". He enlisted with three of his friends much to the chagrin of his father. Edmound died on the battlefield. Bartholomew was wounded n lost his left leg along with his twin brother. Xavier returned a broken shell of a man suffering from PTSD. Receiving no communication from home, he finds himself catapulted to the rank of Earl of Carlisle. It is a title tainted with the scent of scandal since his father perished while consuming a salad laced with prawns, which he was allergic to , in the boudoir of his mistress.Read this witty, enchanting , humorful tale of the beautiful naive Yank and the handsome Earl as they blunder their way thru the social proprieties as Miss Macaroni takes London by storm.9 of 9 people found the following review helpful.Willful wallflower meets impoverished earlBy Judy the Kindle AddictGrace and Oliver meet at a ball. She's by herself and he can't understand why everyone is overlooking the most beautiful woman in the room. Well, it seems that Grace is from America, has an accent to prove it, is not titled, and has the stink of trade. But Oliver doesn't mind any of that because he's instantly smitten, and yet he can't act on those feelings because he needs to marry a wealthy heiress and her dowry isn't large enough. Grace is also smitten, but she needs to marry someone who won't need her dowry and won't mind her leaving for America immediately after the wedding.When they're caught in a compromising situation, they have no other choice but to marry, which just might ruin them all.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Very sweetBy TracyJaneA very sweet novella. Both Grace and Oliver are wonderful leads. They are both likable and immediately attracted to one another.Unfortunately, they both need a rich spouse. Grace needs one so she can take her dowry and go back to America and save her sick mother. I read reviews where they felt this part of the story was unbelievable - I would disagree - I thought the author did a very good job of showing the reader that Grace wasn't aware that the dowry would belong to her husband and not her, she also showed us that Grace's life in America was very different and while she wouldn't have had the right to her dowry there either - she most likely wouldn't have had one, so the topic never came up and her ignorance was believable.Oliver needs a rich wife to save his estate from ruin. Again I thought the author did a great job of showing the reader how Oliver's estate got to this point without his knowledge.When Oliver tries to defend Grace, he inadvertently causes a scandal and then later when trying to set things right between them comprises her - leaving them no choice but to wed - the scene when they are caught in the library was very funny. At this point, I loved Oliver - he was one of the sweetest heroes I have ever read. He really cares for Grace and even with all his troubles and worries - his main concern was making her happy.Grace wasn't quite as generous - she is still dead set on leaving as soon as she can to save her mother - while I understand her desire and her cause is noble - she did come across as a little selfish.Thankfully, the author finds a solution to this dilemma and they get a much deserved HEA.I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series and would happily recommend this book.See all 211 customer reviews...
