People were touting the benefits of college when I was in middle school/high school and people's egos were massaged by getting into a prestigious college although, unfortunately,in terms of value, there was no imparting value. When I got there, I was in for the biggest disappointment in my life because the professors didn't care about teaching, and the students didn't care about learning. UCLA was mentioned for its low quality of education in Milton Friedman's book Free to Choose and that was written in the 1980s! College is a business and like any evil, greedy businesses it only cares about money without providing any value in exchange.Having been both a student and a teacher, I've come to the conclusion that our education system is one big fraud and a disguised pyramid scheme. Unfortunately, students are tricked because they've been bombarded with propaganda since their youth about the necessity of going to college. Teachers are tricked because they realize they are pawns for school administrations and fear getting fired for not "going with the plan".Colleges do not care about what you as an undergraduate learn because there is no money in it after they suck your tuition dollars. However, there is money in the work/research of professors and sometimes graduate students whether its federal government grants or corporate/industrial funding. That is why so much is emphasized in research and no emphasis in teaching or learning at a university.There are so many ways colleges use marketing to trick both parents and students into going into debt. This book goes into detail about all the marketing ploys.A highly recommended read if you want to learn about what goes on in most universities or just the basic concept of marketing in general.14 of 14 people found the following review helpful.Fun, Informative and Somewhat ControversialBy J. NorthBoy, talk about sacred cows...people question religion and politics, but not many people have the guts to question the value of College (with a capital "C".) Obviously the title is an attention-getting ploy, but the substance is spot on in many areas. While the author stops short of saying that a 4-year college is a total waste of time for most, she does point out that there are other, often overlooked, alternatives such as technical schools, self-study, etc. which would serve many just as well or better. Also, she demonstrates, quite effectively I think, that many general, non-specific degrees are pretty worthless. And the real value of the book is in its assertion that borrowing money for college is especially questionable.Her behind-the-scenes look at how colleges operate, from her apparent personal experience and through research, is quite an eye opener.It's also a fun read.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Tution rates soar...By S. L.In 1988 tution for UTA was $500. Today it is $4500-$5000. Tuition has increased about 5 times the rate of inflation. I speculate that this is due to supply and demand and limited seats. We are seeing a record number of students. People believe that a bachelor's degree is the only way to be. I've heard that in Germany there is no shame in skipping college. There is a shortage of work for graduates. And there is probably a shortage of non degree employees.See all 6 customer reviews...
