Through the vehicle of memoir, Prof. Barber is at once candid about his expectations of the President, his own ambition, his seduction, and his ultimate disappointments. The best parts of this book are Prof. Barber's discussion about the way that language shapes our understanding of civic life; and how Clinton's inability to use language effectively left his legacy empty.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Again Barbers excitement is threw the roof due to both his love of politics and his love of President Clinton's charmBy ReviewerBenjamin Barber does a commendable job describing his "affair", as he likes to call it, with President Clinton. Barber paints a picture of is "outsider" interactions with the president through a series of seminars the president used to draw topics for his State of the Union address. The president is painted as irresistibly charming and politically seductive, thus Barber's "affair" with the president. Descriptive words that would be thought associated with the scandal are used threw out the book to describe Barber's relationship with the president, giving a sense of humor but in a quickly irritating way. Barber hold firm in his admiration of the president on his assent to power, in his crash of impeachment and in his oddly lasting legacy.Barber is invited to an all day seminar a few weeks before the Bill Clinton's first State of the Union address. Needless to say, the democratic university professor, who had been extremely politically active especially during the Vietnam War, is overwhelmed that the President wants to hear what Barber has to say. Due to his nerves and excitement Barber rambled a little long and strayed a little off topic when his turn came, but the president gave him his charming thanks and continued to invite Barber to dinners a few days before each State of the Union address.Barber eventually finds himself as candidate for Chairman of the NEH. Again Barbers excitement is threw the roof due to both his love of politics and his love of President Clinton's charm. Despite his loss in the small race and the President's impeachment Barber continues to support Bill Clinton with his friendship and his advice as a writer on the President's speeches.Barber credits the American people for President Clinton's "success". He says that they accept their brother leader and all his mistakes because they do no expect more than what they are. This I feel is unfortunately true. The nation has become extremely immoral and no longer expects its citizens or its leaders to be held accountable for their actions.Barber's interactions and admirations of the President are very well described, but Barber chooses to ignore President Clinton's short comings. He instead prefers to stay under the comfort of the President's charm and smooth words. While Barber describes his friendship with the President as feeling more than what it was he still chose to hold to the legacy of the President's words, not his actions.See all 2 customer reviews...
