MillerAlexis has been doing her best to raise Gib, her autistic, adopted brother, since their parents' death, but it looks like she'll lose custody; country music star Ethan has just learned he's Gib's father, and plans to gain custody -- at least until he meets Alexis and Gib.(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)Plot and Setting: 3 -- Plot mixes cliche/overly convenient with unique/interesting. Plot points in sub-plots are dropped or not resolved. It's a suitably interesting idea, with a custody battle for a challenging autistic child, plus the added issues of fame and romantic attraction. But it doesn't feel well-executed. It also felt like the most interesting/important aspects of the story -- how they actually moved forward with building relationships and satisfying CPS -- were skipped entirely, as we leap from one Christmas to the next. Setting (including timeline) is somewhat unclear or inconsistent. Though I deduced that Jasper Falls is in New York from context clues, it never actually says so.Characters: 2.5 -- Main characters are only partially relatable, realistic, interesting, or dynamic. Minor characters are almost exclusively stereotyped or simplified. Relationships between characters are not especially well developed. I didn't feel a connection to the characters, and their relationships felt tenuous. I didn't really believe the romance between Alexis and Ethan. She seemed unsure of the nature of their relationship right up until he proposed, which is problematic. It also took a while for me to realize that Jasmine was meant to be a friend from California who moved to be with Alexis and Gib. It's unclear exactly how old Gib is, and while his behaviors do show one possible face of autism, there seemed to be many generalizations that aren't really accurate.Mechanics and Writing: 2.5 -- Frequent typos, punctuation issues, and word errors. Repetition, misuse of words (wanton and iridescent), trouble with commas and hyphens, and some weird formatting with a few paragraph and section breaks. Generally solid use of POV (Alexis and Ethan). Average writing, with strong parts and parts that struggle. Some really awkward phrases, such as 'sweetness too often caged by misfired neurons caressed her spirit.' I wasn't always sure what exactly these odd phrases were trying to convey.Redeeming Value: 3-- Incidental uplifting themes or lessons. Ethan credits the dramatic shift in his lifestyle to a new faith in God. Both Alexis and Ethan want what is best for Gib, and Alexis is particularly self-sacrificing in the process. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified, though there was clearly some of this in Ethan's past.Personal Enjoyment: 2 -- I’m not a fan. Some good bits, but reading it felt rather like a chore. Not one I plan to re-read.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Better than "Rain Man"By T. FountainAlthough this book lists as women's fiction or romantic fiction, I picked it up because I'm the dad of a son with autism. With a background in social services, Linda Wood Rondeau builds her story as key characters react to this neurological disorder. She does an outstanding job of portraying both the condition and its impact on family and community. While the very good movie "Rain Man" remains the touch point for popular understanding of autism, it has some problems. For one, it focuses on a savant (the Dustin Hoffman character's off the charts math skills). Rondeau shows the more usual run of sensory, cognitive and social challenges. Also, the main care giver in the story is a stressed out sister functioning as a single mom, far more realistic than a road trip to Las Vegas with Tom Cruise as a long lost brother. The romance that emerges between key characters is refreshingly human. Points of conflict and possible loss are not traumatic but arise from the flaws that hinder everyday people. This book tells a good story while opening a window on a significant health and family issue, without becoming didactic or preachy. Great warmth and humanity with surprising depth for a romantic novel.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An excellent read. I often read to learn, as well as for enjoyment and this book satisfied both interests.By Gloria Antypowich“A Father’s Prayer” by Linda Wood Rondeau was an excellent read. I often read to learn, as well as for enjoyment and this book satisfied both interests. I bought “A Fathers Prayer” after I read the authors bio and the summary of the book. I wanted to see how the writer handled the challenge of being a sole care giver to an autistic child in a story. The book delivered far more than I had expected. It is well written, the characters felt real to me, and I related to the challenges Alexis Jennings faced while loving and caring for her adopted autistic brother, Gib Jennings. I felt that the book also gave a realistic look into the world of a twelve year old child with a form of autism, and I really appreciated that.Ethan Jacobs had problems of his own. Fame and success had only deepened his addiction to alcohol. It took learning that he had a son to make him change his life and overcome his weakness. But can he actually step in and be a father to a child whose world is not like that of other children, a child who has never met him and a child who is still reeling from the death of his adoptive parentsThis is an inspirational Christian book, but the faith and belief of both Alexis Jennings and Ethan Jacobs is not a “preach”—rather it is woven seamlessly into the fabric of both characters who are well rounded and richly portrayed. This is a short novella—I read it in a couple of hours. Perfect for an afternoon escape or those who like to read in one sitting. To be honest, I would love to have read a longer format, where the characters relationship had time to develop and grow and that is why I am giving it four starsStill I would recommend this book to anyone.See all 70 customer reviews...
